Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

Linear keypad and intercom repair in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $145 to $385 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a worn keypad face, a failed intercom module, or rewiring a corroded connection. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, and most repairs are done in one visit. The way owners usually find us is the same story we hear every week: the keypad works fine for years, then one afternoon it takes three tries to get the gate open, or the intercom crackles so badly you can’t understand a word the visitor says. Salt air and daily rain do a number on outdoor electronics here, and Linear parts are no exception.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

We service Linear keypads and intercoms across the AK series keypads (AK-11, AK-11B, AK-21), the AE series intercoms, and the APeX and MegaCode receiver families that most Fort Lauderdale gate openers use. The compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Linear has two wiring standards, and a keypad wired for a MegaCode receiver won’t talk to an older Multi-Code receiver without a bridge module. That mismatch is the single most common reason a “brand new” keypad fails right out of the box. OEM Linear parts carry the brand’s exact fit and finish, but we also stock quality aftermarket equivalents from suppliers we’ve tested for at least three years in South Florida humidity. On a keypad face, aftermarket is usually fine. On an intercom board, we push OEM Linear, because the aftermarket boards we’ve seen in Fort Lauderdale have a bad habit of losing audio quality after eighteen months of salt exposure. Look for the model number on a sticker inside the keypad face or on the intercom housing, usually printed near the wiring terminals. That number tells us exactly which family you have and what parts will actually plug in.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Buttons need multiple firm presses to register. This is almost always worn conductive pads under the keypad face, not a bad board. In Fort Lauderdale, the rubber pads swell slightly from humidity, which accelerates the wear. Replacing the face assembly fixes it for years, and we keep them on the truck.
  • The keypad works sometimes but not after rain. Water is getting into the housing, usually through the mounting gasket or a cracked cover. The board may still be salvageable, but if we see corrosion on the terminals, the only honest fix is a new unit with a properly sealed gasket.
  • The intercom rings but voice comes through as a choppy mess. On Linear AE-series intercoms, this is typically a failing audio transformer or a corroded speaker cone. The speaker sits right behind the faceplate grille, and salt air eats it faster than you’d think.
  • The intercom works but the gate doesn’t open from the handset. This is usually a relay contact that’s welded or worn, not a wiring problem. The relay is a replaceable part on most Linear boards, which is a $120 to $180 repair instead of a $400 board replacement.
  • You hear a hum but no voice at all. The speaker driver has failed. On older Linear units, this is common after six or seven years outdoors. It can be replaced individually, which keeps the original housing and wiring.

A locked gate only protects you if it actually locks, and a keypad that only works when it feels like it means you’re standing in the driveway while your gate ignores you. That’s not a security feature, that’s a schedule problem.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge in Fort Lauderdale, parts and labor together:

  • Keypad face and conductive pad replacement: $145 to $195
  • Complete AK-series keypad replacement: $225 to $310
  • Intercom speaker or relay repair: $120 to $180
  • Complete intercom module replacement: $285 to $385
  • Wiring repair or corrosion cleanup at the junction box: $85 to $150

The range depends on what we find when we open the housing: a clean swap on a newer unit lands on the low end, while a keypad that’s been leaking for six months might need a new mounting plate, gasket, and terminal strip. We write the price down and hand it to you before any work starts. That includes the part, the labor, the cleanup, and testing on both the visitor side and the open side. No line items appear later, ever. The repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Cole Rafferty signs off on that promise on every invoice we hand out in Fort Lauderdale.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before calling. Look at the keypad face for visible cracks, especially around the mounting screws. Press every button and note whether the issue is one button or all of them. If the intercom is dead entirely, check the breaker and the low-voltage transformer at the gate operator. What you shouldn’t do is open the intercom housing with the power still connected. Linear intercoms run on low-voltage DC, but the gate operator they connect to has 110V or 220V nearby, and the wiring isn’t always labeled the way you’d hope. If the keypad buttons feel soft or the intercom crackles only when the gate motor runs, stop troubleshooting and call us. We can walk through it on the phone and usually have the right part on the truck before we head your way. Call (754) 354-9065 and ask for a free estimate.
