Ghost Controls keypad and intercom repair in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $185 – $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad module, the intercom board, or both. We stock Ghost Controls-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, so most repairs are done in a single visit. The way you’ll usually find out this part has failed is simple: the keypad lights up but won’t trigger the gate, or the intercom rings but the audio sounds like it’s underwater, or the whole unit has gone dark after a South Florida downpour.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Ghost Controls. What that means for you is this: we diagnose the actual failed component instead of selling you a whole new system. Cole Rafferty, who runs our Fort Lauderdale operation, has been pulling Ghost Controls keypads apart long enough to know that most failures come down to three things: moisture intrusion at the seal, corroded wire terminals, or a fried keypad ribbon cable. Rarely all three.
Key takeaways:
- Most Ghost Controls keypad and intercom issues are repairable without replacing the whole opener
- We carry OEM and quality aftermarket Ghost Controls-compatible parts on the truck
- Written price before any work starts, every time
- Same-day service is usually available for keypad failures; call (754) 354-9065 to confirm
Which Ghost Controls Models This Applies To
Ghost Controls makes three main series that we regularly service in Fort Lauderdale: the AXP (solar-ready, most common in Florida), the R series (standard AC-powered), and the TSS (heavy-duty swing and slide). If you have a Ghost Controls keypad, it’s almost certainly the AXPK or the WKP wireless keypad, which work across all three series. The intercom options are typically the AXIC or the newer AXI intercom module, which pairs with the keypad for two-way audio at the gate.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: the Ghost Controls AXPK keypad is not electrically identical to the older Ghost Controls KP-1, even though they look nearly the same from the outside. The ribbon connector pitch is different, and forcing an older keypad onto a newer control board will blow the keypad’s microcontroller. If your opener was installed before 2019, we need the model number off the control board sticker before we load a replacement. Take a photo of the label inside the opener box and text it to us; that saves a second trip.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for Ghost Controls specifically: the OEM keypad is fine, but we’ve seen better long-term performance in Fort Lauderdale’s humidity from the sealed aftermarket units that use a silicone membrane instead of a clicky microswitch array. That’s the part we stock more of on our trucks. Microswitches corrode fast when salt air and afternoon thunderstorms are in the mix, and a membrane keypad simply has fewer places for moisture to sit.

Signs Your Ghost Controls Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but won’t open the gate. The keypad is getting power, which means the issue is usually the output relay on the keypad board or a broken wire between the keypad and the control board. The relay is a $20 part; the labor is straightforward.
- Buttons stick or need hard presses. The microswitches under the keys have started to corrode, which is common within 3 – 5 years of installation within 5 miles of Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway. Salt air accelerates this faster than inland neighborhoods like Plantation or Davie.
- Intercom rings but audio is garbled or silent. This is typically a failed condenser mic on the intercom board, or water has wicked into the speaker cone through a hairline crack in the faceplate gasket. South Florida’s wet season will find any gap in a seal.
- The whole unit is dead, no backlight, no beep. Check your low-voltage transformer first before you call us; Ghost Controls keypads run on 12 – 24V DC, and a tripped GFCI outlet or a blown transformer is the culprit about 40% of the time we see this in Fort Lauderdale.
- The gate opens on its own at random. A failing keypad can send phantom open signals when moisture bridges the button contacts. This one is a security problem, not just a nuisance. A locked gate only protects you if it actually locks.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Ghost Controls keypad and intercom work in Fort Lauderdale, here’s the honest price picture:
- Keypad only replacement: $185 – $275 installed (part plus labor)
- Intercom board or module repair: $145 – $260 installed
- Full keypad + intercom replacement: $310 – $420 installed
- Diagnostic visit (if no repair is made): $79, applied toward the repair if you proceed
What drives the range is whether we’re installing an OEM Ghost Controls part or the sealed aftermarket equivalent, and whether your existing wiring needs to be re-pulled. In older Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Rio Vista, we sometimes find original 2-conductor wire that Ghost Controls keypads technically work on, but the intercom needs a separate audio pair. That adds a little labor when we have to run new low-voltage wire.
Every price is quoted in writing before we touch a single screw. The number you approve is the number you pay. And the whole repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the keypad or intercom fails again within a year, the return visit is free. We’ll make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
The safe DIY checks: verify the transformer is plugged in and the GFCI hasn’t tripped, visually inspect the keypad face for cracks or a loose gasket, and check that the wires at the keypad terminals aren’t obviously loose or green with corrosion. You can do those three things in ten minutes without opening the opener housing.
What we don’t recommend doing yourself is opening the Ghost Controls keypad to clean or replace an internal board. The keypad ribbon cable is fragile, the connector is easy to misalign, and the control board you’re plugging into carries live low-voltage current that can short. We’ve repaired several DIY keypad attempts in Fort Lauderdale where the owner shorted a $12 component and ended up needing a $300 control board. If you’ve done the basic checks and the keypad still isn’t working, call (754) 354-9065. We’ll bring the right part and the right test gear on the first trip.
FAQs
In Fort Lauderdale’s heat and humidity, a Ghost Controls keypad typically lasts 4 – 7 years before the buttons or board start failing. Units installed closer to salt water, like in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea or along the Intracoastal, trend toward the shorter end of that range. Call (754) 354-9065 if yours is showing any of the signs above; we can tell you in about ten minutes whether it’s worth repairing or replacing.
Yes, in many cases. We repair failed buttons, corroded terminals, and bad intercom mics at the component level. If the failure is on the keypad’s microcontroller or the board is water-damaged beyond cleaning, replacing the keypad is the smarter move, and we’ll show you the board before you pay anything.
Most keypad replacements take 30 – 45 minutes. An intercom board swap is usually 20 minutes. If we need to run new low-voltage wire or reposition the keypad for better signal, add another hour. We’ll give you a time estimate with the written price before work starts.
Yes. Our Fort Lauderdale trucks carry OEM Ghost Controls AXPK and WKP keypads, the sealed aftermarket equivalent, and common intercom modules. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and DoorKing systems, so if your Ghost Controls keypad turns out to be a wiring issue tied to another brand’s opener, we’re still covered for the fix.
